"Career Day at the Kansas City Star was one of the finest programs I have been associated with in my 30-year newspaper career, 14 of which have been at the Iowa State Daily at Iowa State University. The Career Day was the brainchild of Deb Calvert when she was Director of Sales and Training at the Kansas City Star, and it brought my Iowa State Daily students together with the Star's advertising department.
During a day of mentoring by the Star's top professionals, my students learned about all the various positions in the Star's advertising world and what each person did in those positions. Those students chosen for internships with the newspaper experienced an even higher level of opportunity. The program was organized, well supervised and extremely beneficial to all of our students who attended during those years. It was a wonderful recruiting strategy that benefited both my students and the Kansas City Star. The program got many students committed to a career in advertising, many of whom still work at the Star."
